Does your vacation destination this summer include a warm, sunny beach? Or some hiking or camping in the great outdoors? Whatever your holiday plans, if they include a lot of sunshine, make sure you protect yourself with these sun safety tips:
Wear sunscreen.
Not all sunscreens are effective. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays and has a Sun Protection Factor of at least 30. Remember, you should always apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out into the sun and reapply sunscreen every couple of hours or immediately after swimming or exercising. It’s also a good idea to wear sunscreen even during cloudy weather.
Dress for protection.
Tightly woven, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing is not only your best protection against the sun, it also helps you stay cool. An essential wardrobe item is a good hat; broad-brimmed hats that protect your shoulders as well as your head and face are the safest choice. Sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection will keep your eyes safe as well.
Minimize midday sun exposure.
The sun is at its strongest between 11 am and 4 pm, so it’s best to limit time spent in direct sunlight during those hours. If you will be outside for the full day, take plenty of breaks in the shade. One way to ensure you find shade is to bring a large beach umbrella.
Stay hydrated.
Even if you’re not directly in the sun, it can be easy to get dehydrated in hot weather. This can lead to heatstroke or sunstroke. Therefore, be sure to replenish your fluids by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and don’t forget that tropical cocktails may be delicious, but they don’t actually help you stay hydrated.
