Making the Most of a Short City Break

by Royal Holiday

Weekend city breaks are becoming very popular with travelers who want a refreshing change of scene without the time commitment, effort, or expense that accompany a longer holiday. Whatever destination you choose, these tips will help you make the most of your next short city break:

Leave as early as possible.

Time is precious when you’ve only got two days. Stretch your weekend a bit further by leaving for your break as early as possible. If you do your traveling on Friday, even late at night, it makes a big difference to how long your weekend feels.

Don’t try to do it all.

Trying to cram a week’s worth of sightseeing and activities into 48 hours will likely just leave you feeling tired and frustrated. Instead, pick just one or two key sights or destinations to visit each day, being sure to leave time for more relaxing things like leisurely morning coffee or a gentle stroll through an interesting neighborhood. Don’t forget that a “city break” is as much about the break as it is about the city.

Stay central.

Choosing centrally located accommodations may add a bit more to the total cost of your trip, but it can be worth it because you’ll save time getting to the places you want to be. Instead of spending hours on buses or subways getting to and from your hotel, you’ll have more time to relax and explore.

Have a backup plan.

You don’t want to spend your weekend wandering and confused if your original plans are interrupted by unexpected closures or uncooperative weather. When you’re planning out what you want to do with your two days, be sure to have several possible options, and be open and ready to switch your plans on the fly if necessary.
