    Fall Festivals in Mexico

by Royal Holiday March 4, 2014
    written by Royal Holiday

Royal Holiday’s more than 100,000 members can use their holiday credits to travel to Mexico at any time of year. Many take advantage of the opportunity to escape during the cold months of the winter or to get away to the beach during the height of summer. But autumn in Mexico offers attractions as well, particularly for travelers interested in taking part in some of the best festivals the world has to offer.

Fall in Mexico plays host to some of the country’s biggest festivals. Fall festivals start with the Fiestas del Sol in Mexicali, just over the border from the United States in Baja California. The festival celebrates the city’s founding with mechanical rides, parades, and concerts. Royal Holiday members can use their points to book nights at Wave Crest at Del Mar or Winners Circle Resort in nearby San Diego, California.

Baja plays host to a raft of events over the following 30 days, including the Cabo Comedy Festival, Expo Tequila, and local celebrations for the Dia de la Raza, which recognizes the arrival of Columbus to the Americas. Elsewhere in the country, other localities put on their own festivities. In Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo, not far from Royal Holiday resorts on Cozumel and in Cancun, a free, yearly Sea Turtle Festival is held in mid-October. And in Mexico City, the Monumental Alebrijes Parade, a procession of enormous fantastical creations, occurs around the same time.

The end of the month, of course, sees the Dia de Muertos, one of Mexico’s most visible festivals. For three days during the Dia, Mexicans honor their deceased relatives in homes and cemeteries around the country. During some of the largest celebrations, which demonstrate the Mexican culture’s tendency to celebrate, rather than mourn death, crowds can become enormous. Festivals later in the fall include Mexico City’s Fiesta de Santa Cecilia, a mariachi celebration of the patron saint of musicians.
