2026 EQUINOX: EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF SPRING IN YUCATÁN

by Royal Holiday March 17, 2026
    written by Royal Holiday

If you’re thinking about a trip in March that combines beach, history, and a unique experience, you should go to Cancun. In addition to enjoying this fabulous destination in the Mexican Caribbean, you can witness one of the most impressive phenomena: the spring equinox in Chichén Itzá, one of the mysteries of Mayan culture.

WHEN IS THE 2026 SPRING EQUINOX?

    Gobierno de Yucatán

In 2026, the spring equinox is on March 20th, when the day and the night are practically the same length.

During these days – specifically between the 19th and 21st of March – thousands of travelers are reunited in Chichén Itzá to observe a phenomenon that looks otherworldly and that reflects the astronomical knowledge of Mayan culture.

What makes the spring equinox in Chichén Itzá so special is the famous “Descent of Kukulkán.” Discover the best family adventures in the Riviera Maya!

In the afternoon, the sun casts a shadow onto the north stairway of the Castle pyramid, creating the illusion of a snake slowly descending until it reaches the stone-sculpted head, making it a perfect picture.

This game of light and shadow is no coincidence: it is clear proof of the Mayan culture’s mathematical and astronomical knowledge.

Seeing this phenomenon is not only impressive on a visual level but also a spiritual and cultural experience that is worth enjoying at least once in your life.

For many Mexican visitors, it represents an opportunity to reconnect with our roots and value the living heritage of Mayan culture, which continues to awe people from all around the world.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR VISIT FROM CANCUN

Getting to Chichén Itzá from Cancun is pretty simple. The archaeological zone is found 2.5 to 3 hours away by car.

You can choose an organized tour that includes transportation, a guide, and early access, or rent a car for more flexibility.

We recommend leaving early, around 6:00 am. Wear light clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. You should check the general information about the archaeological zone for this particular event to plan your day better. Remember you can book tours and transportation with Royal Travel.

YOUR TRIP TO CANCUN: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH COMFORT

Choosing the correct accommodation in Cancun is incredibly important. Two excellent options with your membership are Park Royal Beach Cancún and Club Regina, both ideal for combining rest and activities in this Mexican destination.

Park Royal Beach Cancún is ideal if you’re traveling as a family because it is all-inclusive, it is by the beach, it has incredible pools, an international cuisine restaurant, and daily activities. It also has an excellent location.

After an exciting day at Chichén Itzá celebrating the spring equinox, this hotel will be ideal for a good rest.

On the other hand, Club Regina offers a more relaxed and elegant style. Located near Punta Nizuc, it has big suites, spectacular views of the Caribbean, first-level gastronomy, and amenities designed for complete rest.
