In downtown Cancun, El Rey is located on kilometer 18 of Boulevard Kukulcan within the hotel area. Its name comes from a sculpture that looked like the representation of a monarch. The head portion can now be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Cancun. In El Rey you can see several structures on a main ancient road and 2 small public squares.
Tulum is a wonderful archeological site in the Mayan Riviera, just 130 kilometers south of Cancun and off the coast of the Caribbean Sea. It is a walled city built in the thirteenth century and an essential stop in along an ancient Mexican trade route. Visit El Castillo and the Temple of the Frescoes, its walls show remains of paintings in gray and blue tones.
Coba, about 40 km northwest of Tulum, is a site that dates back to 500 CE. It was one of the largest and most powerful cities of its time. There you can admire the pyramid of Nohoch Mul, which is 42 meters high, an observatory, and reliefs with Mayan inscriptions.
Another must see is Chichen Itza in Yucatan. Although it is located 188 km from Cancun, this ceremonial center is well worth a trip. The impressive structure was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The temple of Kukulcan also earned a nomination as a world wonder thanks to millions of voters around the world.
