How to Cope with Travel Stress

by Royal Holiday January 20, 2014
    written by Royal Holiday

Even if you are taking a vacation to a fabulous, all-inclusive resort in paradise, traveling can be stressful. There can be a lot to keep track of, from flight schedules to packing. You also might find that it is not easy to detach from the stresses of your day-to-day life. Luckily, you can deal with a lot of travel stress by applying a little planning and mental flexibility.

Before you leave on your trip, your anxieties may center on how and when you are going to reach your destination. You can deal with this kind of stress by staying on top of travel-related news. Keep an eye on your airline’s website for reports of delays. Watch your airport’s website for information about security and wait times. To avoid stress generated by finding transportation at your destination, try to sort out your route from the airport to your accommodations before you leave.

Packing can be another stressor for travelers. To manage this chore, try making a list of what your needs will be and what you plan to bring with you. It may help you feel confident that you have thought of everything. Packing ahead of time, rather than scrambling to throw things in a suitcase with time ticking down toward your flight, can also lead to a more relaxed travel day.

Once you arrive at your destination, the stresses change. If you are the type of traveler who worries about things at home while on vacation, be sure to take care of obligations like bills and social events like birthdays before you leave. If you travel with your family or a group, you may find yourself affected by the travel stress of others as well. Be prepared to talk people through their own worries. If your destination is somewhere far away or dangerous, you may need to reassure loved ones left behind about your safety.

Finally, it is important to maintain a positive attitude. Try not to sweat the little details or even the big ones if you can. A missed train does not need to be a negative experience. If things do go wrong, step back and assess the situation and your needs. You can then approach finding a solution calmly. Your problem may be easier to address than you initially expect.
