The diverse type of beaches in México allow various activities to suit everyone’s tastes. Particularly for the practice of surfing, there are some of the favorites ones for worldwide lovers of this sport.
The massiveness of the waves and the season of your visit, are two fundamental factors when choosing which beach to go. Also, if you are a beginner or an expert, each place presents different challenges.
In recent years, a surfing legend, Gary Linden, has even promoted world competitions in Mexican soil.
Therefore, we recommend places where you can practice this sport and enjoy an unforgettable experience. The list starts in the Baja California Peninsula, going all the way to Oaxaca:
Ensenada, Baja California – It is located on the outside of the Tijuana area – near the border with the United States – which makes it a suitable place to be visited by surfboard lovers. You will find cold waters and the best waves, especially in winter. For beginners, there is Hermosa Beach; and for professionals, the Beaches of San Miguel and Todos Santos.
Mazatlán, Sinaloa – Mazatlán’s surfing season runs from April to October. From the family atmosphere of Los Pinos Beach to the breaking of Olas Altas Beach, you may choose any of it. So, get your surfboard ready and enjoy an adrenaline-filled experience for 2020. For beginners, we recommend Los Pinos Beach; and for professionals, Olas Altas Beach.
If you decide to go there, as a Royal member you can stay at Park Royal Homestay Mazatlán, applying the European Plan.
Types of beaches in México: the Pacific Ocean is king for surfing.
Sayulita, Nayarit – One of the best surfing destinations on the Mexican shore. Right along the beautiful – although small- stretch of sand of Sayulita Beach, you can find places where you can rent all the equipment to enjoy this sport, and also buy your surfing keels for your surfboard. That makes it the perfect place for surfers of all skill capacities. For beginners, we recommend Sayulita Beach; and for professionals, Carricitos Beach.
Cuyutlán, Colima – If you go along the Mexican coast you can reach the small State of Colima, whose potential for navigation has been overlooked by both, residents and visitors. The most famous beach is Boca de Pascuales, which is legendary for its high jumps and curtains coming from all directions, and should only be taken by experts. However, in this region there are still many beaches for beginners to go surfing, known for its green water. For beginners, go to Cuyutlán; and for professionals, the one is Boca de Pascuales.
La Ticla, Michoacán – This old fishing village has become an ideal place to surf due to the way that waves break. The ideal season to make the most of its waves is during the summer; however, there are good waves all year round. For beginners go to Troncones Beach; and for professionals, to Troncones Point.
Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca – These beaches are recommended for more skilled surfers who already have had some experience on the board; however, that doesn’t mean there aren’t beaches in the area suitable for beginners. The best beach for professionals is La Punta.
