BACKPACK VS. SUITCASE: WHAT TO CHOOSE DEPENDING ON YOUR TRAVEL STYLE

    written by Royal Holiday

When we start planning our vacations, between checking transportation, reservations, and tourist areas, we begin to wonder: how should we pack? And should we take a backpack or a suitcase? It may seem like a minor detail; however, choosing the type of luggage you take can make a big difference during your trip. The answer is simple: it really depends on the type of travel style you want, the destination, the duration of the trip, and the weather.

That’s why we want to go through the advantages and disadvantages of both types of luggage with you. By knowing these tips, you’ll be able to make a more informed decision.

BACKPACK: THE BEST FRIEND OF PRACTICAL TRAVELERS

Having a backpack is the perfect choice for those looking to move freely. If you’re planning to visit different European cities by train, go backpacking through South America, or even just take a short getaway, traveling with only a backpack can be a great option.

With a backpack, your hands are always free. Having the weight on your back allows you to walk comfortably, take pictures, grab a coffee, and even check maps without complications.

It’s also a great way to gain mobility. On cobbled streets, stairs, and long walks, you don’t have to worry about dragging a suitcase around. Best of all, backpacks are usually smaller than regular suitcases, so they often fit as carry-on luggage. This helps you avoid long waits at airport baggage carousels, and you won’t have to pay extra fees. Start the year traveling to these 5 destinations.

Although traveling with a backpack can be very convenient, it also has its disadvantages. To start with, your back may get tired after a couple of hours. And if you like to have planned outfits for every day, packing light and strategically can be a challenge.

If you decide to take a backpack, make sure you choose one with multiple compartments to stay organized.

    SUITCASES: THE ALL-TIME CLASSIC

A suitcase—especially one with wheels—remains the most popular option. This is ideal for long trips, family vacations, or trips where you don’t have to carry your luggage everywhere.

Of course, the main advantage of a suitcase is comfort. Thanks to the wheels, you carry much less weight. If you use organizers, it’s also much easier to pack and keep everything tidy—clean and dirty clothes, tops and bottoms, accessories, and more.

Suitcases come in different sizes, which helps you choose exactly what you need. Some are even suitable as carry-on luggage, which can improve your airport experience.

Although suitcases can be very convenient, they also have disadvantages. To begin with, you may have to pay an extra fee unless checked luggage is included in your plane ticket.

You’ll also need to make more effort when going up stairs, rolling them over small or cobbled streets, or moving through dirt roads, as a suitcase can become a hindrance instead of a help. And of course, when you’re rolling a suitcase, one or both of your hands may not be free for other tasks.

    TRAVEL ADVICE

Take into consideration the length of your trip. For short weekend getaways, a backpack may be more than enough. However, for longer vacations, a suitcase might be more practical.

If your trip includes hikes, hostels, or frequent use of public transportation, a backpack may be easier to travel with. If you plan to bring back more items than you originally packed or want to buy souvenirs everywhere you go, then a suitcase is the better choice. Would you rather move fast or feel light?

Always check the weight of your luggage, invest in good-quality gear, and most importantly, make sure your belongings are packed safely. Make your reservations now and travel around the world with Royal Holiday!
