HOW TO TRAVEL SUSTAINABLY AND RESPONSIBLY

Traveling is one of the most enriching experiences in life, but it’s also true that tourism can have a strong impact on the environment and on local communities. Today more than ever, we can transform the way in which we explore the world, choosing sustainable tourism as a lifestyle that combines pleasure, conscience, and respect.

In this blog, we want to show you how to take steps towards responsible tourism with some eco tips for transportation, accommodation, and conscious consumption.

They’re simple changes that, if you adopt little by little, can make a big difference.

TRANSPORT: MOVE WITH A LOWER FOOTPRINT

    TRAVEL SUSTAINABLY

Transportation is, without a doubt, one of the most impactful aspects. But don’t worry, there are multiple ways of decreasing that footprint. Here are some eco tips:

Choose short bus or train trips instead of flights when possible to reduce CO2 emissions. And if you have to fly, opt for airlines that have carbon compensation programs.

Once you’re in your destination, use public transportation, rent a bike, or simply walk. In addition to being an important part of sustainable tourism, this is the best way of getting to know every hidden corner and live the day as a local.

    ACCOMMODATION: SLEEP WITH CONSCIENCE

Choosing a place to stay is another key element of responsible trips. Today, many options mix comfort with environmental and social commitment.

Choose hotels or hostels that are certified in sustainable practices. These places often have water-saving systems, recycling programs, and use renewable energy. Make the most of holidays and long weekends with your membership!

Go for small and familiar accommodations that support the local economy, instead of big hotel chains.

Apply your own eco-friendly activities during your stay: don’t ask for clean towels every day, turn off the lights and AC when you don’t need them, and take your own reusable water bottle to avoid single-use plastics.

CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION: SUPPORT LOCALS AND REDUCE RESIDUES

    local consumption

Another way of making your trip responsible is taking care of what you consume and who you’re buying from. Eat in local markets, where food is not only delicious and more authentic, but it also favors producers from the area.

When you’re buying souvenirs, focus on local handicrafts, avoiding imported products that you can find anywhere.

Lastly, and the most important eco tip: minimize your residues, take a cloth bag for your shopping, avoid plastic bottles, and take your own utensils or reusable straws if you know you’ll be drinking juices or beverages on the street.

    EDUCATION AND EMPATHY

Sustainable tourism isn’t just about protecting the environment, it’s also about respecting the cultures you visit. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language, and be mindful of traditions and customs.

Be a curious traveler, but never invasive with the people or nature. Responsible trips not only give you photos and memories, but they also give you the satisfaction of knowing that your visit and value helped it.

Now you know! Now’s the time to book and travel the world consciously.
