If you’re looking for a destination in France that combines history, beauty, and gastronomy, Carcassonne is the place to go.

Forget about traditional destinations and discover this medieval corner that will shock you from the start.

The streets of Carcassonne, France look like they’ve been taken out of a fairytale. It is an authentic hidden jewel that we want to share with you.

WHERE IS IT AND HOW TO GET THERE?

Located in the Occitanie region of southern France, Carcassonne is famous for its imposing walled city, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Traveling from Paris is easy: you can take a high-speed train that takes approximately five hours.

If you want a more scenic route: rent a car and enjoy the countryside and the southern vineyards while listening to French songs.

    THE FIRST IMPACT

The first thing you’ll notice is its impressive medieval architecture. The city is divided into two parts: the Citadel, or Cité, is completely fortified, and the low town, where daily life flourishes with coffee shops, stores, and local markets.

Walking the stone-paved streets of the Cité is like traveling back in time: towers, walls, and doors that look like they were taken from a movie.

    THE UNMISSABLES

    Tripadvisor

In Carcassonne, France, don’t miss the Comtal Castle, an imposing castle that dominates the city, and the Basilica of Saint Nazarius and Celsus, with its stained-glass windows that tell old-time stories. Explore Europe! Learn more here.

Additionally, Carcassonne has a special charm in its gastronomy. Here, the dishes mix with flavors from the south, and you can’t leave without trying the famous cassoulet, a white bean stew with meat that will leave you breathless.

Combine it with a nice wine from the Languedoc region, and don’t miss the freshly made chocolate croissants from the low town.

In the low town, you’ll also find bakeries, chocolate stores, and markets where you can take a piece of France back home.

    LET YOURSELF GO

There are many activities: exploring the walls by foot or bike, enjoying a boat ride on the Canal du Midi, or getting lost in the small coffee shops and plazas where local life moves at a different pace.

If your trip is during high season, try staying in the Cité to experience the medieval city, though options in the low town are equally charming and are usually cheaper.

Finally, a local tip: visit Carcassonne, France during sunset. The golden hour makes the towers and walls look magical, and walking its streets while the city starts to lighten up is an incredible experience.

    SOME TIPS

Take comfortable footwear: the stone-paved streets require adequate shoes. In general, clothing is informal, but if you want to have dinner at a restaurant, think about wearing something more formal.

Additionally, buy tickets to Comtal Castle beforehand during the high season.

Let yourself be surprised by this magical destination. Use TravelXtra to find the best accommodation, and voilá!
